Abstract:

The Laboratory for Youth Ministry has had four primary objectives: 1) The creation of a “Lilly Laboratory for Youth Ministry” where youth ministry research can be field tested by supervised interns in training to be theological practitioners of youth ministry and by local congregations in partnership with the CYMT; 2) the creation of a Think Tank that builds bridges between the academic and practitioner youth ministry worlds; 3) the development of resources that translate the latest research findings in the field of youth ministry into tools and can be used by local congregations; and 4) the launch of a second CYMT campus and the expansion of the “Lilly Laboratory for Youth Ministry” where results can be further tested and the field of research expanded. The Laboratory has developed a core curriculum that shapes practical theologians and theologically informed practitioners in youth ministry. It has formed an effective model for youth ministry coaching with youth directors and churches and established clear evaluation mechanisms to identify the "faithful practices" most likely to result in effective youth ministries. In the process, it has created a reproducible model for youth ministry training that includes curriculum, manuals and strategies.
