Workshops on Teaching Religion for Young College and University Teachers

Project Number:

Start Date:
Friday, January 1, 1993
End Date:
Wednesday, December 31, 1997
Abstract:

Administrators at the American Academy of Religion (AAR) developed this project to address the fact that few religious studies faculty entering colleges and universities have had previous teaching experience and even fewer have had the opportunity to reflect on the art of teaching. Barbara DeConcini designed the project as a series of ten regional workshops. Teaching experts assisted junior faculty in developing effective teaching skills and envisioning innovative ways in which religion can be brought into the classroom. The workshop series was presented in ten separate regions across the United States. In addition to these meetings, the AAR established the Lilly Fellows Teacher Network to raise awareness of the issues discussed at the conferences. Under this initiative, an online publication, Sportlight on Teaching, was developed to disseminate information associated with effective teaching strategies. A website, the AARSyllabi Project, was also developed as an online resource for faculty. (KH)
