End Date:

Abstract:

Through collaboration with diocesan and parish leaders in identifying essential competencies for pastoral leadership and allocating resources to provide an intensive and systematic program for lay spiritual formation, Franciscan School of Theology redesigned its recruitment and formation processes for preparing lay ministers for congregational services. The school entered into extensive dialogue with the National Association of Lay Ministry, the Association of Graduate Programs in Ministry, the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, the National Association of Prison Chaplains, and the United States National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ sub Committee on Lay Ecclesial Ministry in order to identify and incorporate into the curriculum essential competencies for pastoral leadership. The grant enabled the school to hire a full-time Director of Lay Spiritual Formation; another resource person in the area of multicultural education and practical theology was hired resulting eventually in the redesign of the lay degree program to provide a stronger multicultural component.
