Abstract: 

This grant supported James William McClendon, Jr., in the development of a contemporary explication of Christian doctrine for the use of pastors, church leaders, and interested outsiders. The visible goal of the project was to be a volume aimed at rediscovering and reshaping the leading ideas of Christian teaching, guided primarily by the question: What must the church teach to be the church? In residence at Fuller Seminary as Distinguished Scholar, McClendon contends that the teaching of doctrinal theology should be the vital center of the Christian community. But a trend away from this focus has, according to McClendon, impaired the capacity of theological education and the power of congregations to nurture a rich, faithful Christian life. The grants supported dialog with Fuller faculty through a series of five meetings and a conference to discuss the work with a diverse, inter-confessional group of theologians. Ultimately, McClendon hopes that he has begun a process of shaping the teaching congregation, forming members of the congregation, and renewing the church through an explication of doctrine in Christian life and conduct.
