Research Project on the Financing of African-American Churches

Project Number:
960072
Start Date:
Monday, January 1, 1996
Abstract:

Pressley and The Institute of Church Administration and Management (ICAM) at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta are investigating the financing of historically Black churches. This project has three main components. First, researchers are surveying clergy and members of congregations affiliated with historically Black congregations in approximately ten cities. Though neither the selection of congregations nor the selection of members will be random, the ICAM surveys, modeled on surveys by Dean Hoge and others, will generate much data on congregational and individual giving. Second, ICAM will commission authors to write chapters for a book, edited by Bishop Thomas Hoyt, intended to provide an overview of the nature of giving to the Black Church. Third, ICAM has commissioned Samuel McKinney, the author of the definitive text on administration in Black churches, to write a book on the culture of congregations. These efforts are expected to mutually inform each other as they proceed. (MC)
