Program Connecting Congregations and Colleges

Project Number:

Start Date:
Sunday, March 1, 1998
Abstract:

Through the Center for the Church and Higher Education at Austin Presbyterian Seminary, Michael Miller has sought to foster collaboration between local congregations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in the southwestern United States and the colleges and universities within these communities. Miller’s efforts have been guided by three essential goals: (1) to improve relations between higher education institutions and the congregations that surround them; (2) to write a book about other models around the country for connecting congregations and colleges; and, (3) to find better methods for connecting faculty, students, and congregations so that each can recognize the commonality of their missions. To meet the first of these goals, Miller created a handbook for discussions in congregations about the challenges and possibilities of establishing a parish-based campus ministry. Towards the third goal, The Center for the Church and Higher Education has developed workshops for lay church leaders to discuss the connection between religion and higher education, created a video and other materials to aid local congregations in setting up campus ministries, and sent college students to religious youth gatherings. As for the second goal, Miller is currently working on a book tentatively titled Models for Parish-Based Campus Ministry. (AS)
