Abstract:

The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) sponsored a conference exploring Christian/Catholic Studies programs on November 7-9, 1997. Attended by forty-nine faculty members from twenty-nine different campuses, the conference brought together those interested in Christian/Catholic Studies programs with notable scholars in the field. Conference participants discussed (1) the background of Catholic Studies, (2) the development and operation of current programs, (3) how to relate faith to faculty research, (4) curriculum, (5) issues associated with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, (6) current research on religion and higher education, (7) the relationship of Catholic Studies to particular constituencies, and (8) future needs. These conversations led participants to recommend that the ACCU support future meetings on this topic, that a seminar of scholars be formed to consider alternative approaches to this issue, that national and regional centers working on this question be supported, that a new center for scholarly research be established and that a committee appointed to solicit a grant for summer institutes on this subject.
