Abstract:

Lynn collected primary sources representing the range of Protestant answers to the question, "Why give?" The material is organized into three parts. "A Republic of Benevolence, 1825-1860," contains material by Lyman Beecher, Pharcellus Church, Catherine Beecher, Samuel Harris, and Abel Stevens. "The Good Steward, 1870-1930," contains material by Mary Abigail Dodge, Josiah Strong, Andrew Carnegie, Washington Gladden, Harvey Reeves Calkins, Ralph S. Cushman, and Reinhold Niebuhr. "A Long Dry Spell," contains material by Harry Emerson Fosdick, Richard S. Emrich, Joseph Fletcher, and Douglas John Hall. Lynn introduces each section with an interpretive essay. (MC)
