Abstract:

Linda Barnes' book provides an ethnographic record of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) workshop series on effective methods of teaching religion. It explores theoretical and practical issues inherent in teaching religion at an American university or college. After AAR completed their first series of workshops, the project leaders asked Linda Barnes to join them as a participant-observer who could document the proceedings. The book covers four workshop series that were conducted during 1996. Barnes analyzes the successful strategies employed at the various conferences as well as what she observed not working. She provides full descriptions of the techniques that made the series a success as well as observations as to how faculty relate to their disciplines and their institutions. Although Barnes focuses on religious studies, her book could be useful to those in other disciplines, particularly with regard to pedagogy and faculty development. (KH)
