Theologia: The Fragmentation and Unity of Theological Knowledge

Abstract:

Farley argues that the fragmentation of theological education into the "four-fold pattern" of competing disciplines designed to facilitate clerical skills is simultaneously cause and effect of the loss of theologia, or existential, personal and praxis-oriented theological understanding as the goal of theological education for clergy. He reviews the history of the "theological encyclopedia movement" in Germany, as well as the impact of this movement on contemporary theological education and efforts to reform it. (RG)
