The Future of an Illusion: An Inquiry into the Contrast between Theological and Religious Studies

Abstract:

Arguing that the distinctions commonly drawn between theological and religious studies are conceptually confused, Thiemann suggests that the distinctions have a political function. He offers a proposal based on a "cultural- linguistic" theory of religion that allows for clarification of the relation between the two. All forms of inquiry that clarify structures in religious traditions thus contribute to the task of religious studies -- a task to which theological studies also contribute. (RG)
