White, Joseph M. The Diocesan Seminary in the United States: A History from the 1780s to the Present. South Bend, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press, 1989.
Abstract:

White provides a comprehensive historical survey of the institutional patterns and major issues related to seminaries' training of diocesan priests of the Latin rite in the U.S. from the 1780s to 1962 (with an epilogic overview of major developments since Vatican II). He utilizes a three-part schema to highlight significant shifts in institutional patterns and issues: forming traditions from the 1780s to 1884, the Americanist Era from 1884 to 1910, and the Roman Period from 1910 to 1962.
