Abstract:

How is authority constituted in religious traditions and how is it exercised? Scheiter observes that authority is a relationship among persons, text and traditions. Weberian authority models are at work in all of the traditions -- traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational. The legal-rational seems to be highly developed, and spiritual formation is becoming increasingly important. The role of traditional authority remains intriguingly uncertain. (RG)
