Abstract:

This training manual is the culmination of two years of intensive field research, consultations, and synthesis of current research and knowledge of effective program models that nurture the spiritual lives of at-risk youth. The manual is based on an extensive survey of Boys Town youth between 1988 and 1990, two symposia on spirituality and at-risk youth in 1989 and 1991, visitations to spiritual growth programs in the United States during the 1991/92 year, and analyses by Dr. Robert Coles. Pilot projects for the training program reflected in the manual were conducted at three sites in 1992, and in 1993 the program was presented to youth care professionals at twelve locations. The program seeks to answer two questions: (1) What does the spiritual life of at-risk youth look like? and (2) What do at-risk youth say helps them to grow spiritually? The training manual offers principles, strategies, and models for developing effective programming in order to foster spiritual growth in at-risk youth. Materials included range from essays and resource lists to statistical information and diagrams. Suggested activities are also included.
