Abstract:

In his article, "Out of the Depths: Faith at Work," Garret Keizer examines the term “overwhelmed.” Keizer explains the definition and the history of the term and reminds the reader that even our ancestors were overwhelmed. Keizer then recalls Thoreau’s famous dictum: “Simply, simplify, simplify” suggesting we should not and need not to be overwhelmed. However, Keizer proposes that being overwhelmed is simply in our nature as human beings. Drawing on several biblical examples, Keizer concludes his article by proposing that it is to our benefit as human beings to be overwhelmed.
