Abstract:

This Congregations, Communities and Leadership Development Project (CCLD) presentation looks at the religious or evangelism element of social service programs in the context of Christian community development projects. The stated workshop goals are four: (1) to introduce models for describing the religious elements of social service programs and the relationship between evangelism and community development; (2) to present theological principles guiding the relationship between evangelism and community ministries; (3) to suggest steps toward strengthening the evangelistic component of social ministries; and (4) to address the issue of evangelism in the context of church-state cooperation. The workshop concludes with two case studies of publicly-funded faith-based church programs that included an evangelistic dimension: Faith Assembly of God and the Transitional Journey Ministry of Cookman United Methodist Church.
