Abstract:

This report is based on a 1992 Independent Sector (IS) national survey of the activities and finances of religious congregations (and the 1992 survey is itself also a partial update of a larger national survey of the activities and finances of congregations conducted in 1987 by IS). Questionnaires were sent to a national sample of 1,003 congregations, representing Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Mormons, Muslims, and Buddhists, and the final sample included completed surveys from 727 congregations. The exhaustive and detailed report provides information about the kinds and levels of community activities and contributions made by religious congregations, as well as the composition, demographics, activities, and resources of religious congregations in the United States.
