Abstract:

The 1997 special issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion (JAAR) is dedicated to a series of articles produced by scholars involved with the American Academy of Religion workshops on teaching religion. Raymond Williams’ foreword outlines five topics considered in this issue. They are the teacher’s life and vocation, teaching goals, specialization/interconnection, social function, and the preparation of students. Willimas describes the articles as both autobiographical and reflective of teaching religion in contemporary American universities and colleges. He notes that the writers come from diverse backgrounds and cover a myriad of issues. Drafts of these articles were discussed at a Lilly-funded conference in April, 1997.
