Final Evaluation Report: Lilly Endowment Grants for Theological Education Research

Abstract:

Wheeler and Kelsey, aided by twelve consultants, evaluate the scope and effectiveness of 47 projects in theological education research funded by the Lilly Endowment between 1980 and 1988. They conclude that while the research has been of generally high quality and has generated change in the field, the scope of the projects -- in the range of personnel, types of religious communities, methods of research and topics involved has been inadequate, and the integration of various types of studies into a coherent body of research has been neglected. They propose that future Lilly-sponsored research be organized to promote a single goal, the integrity (not necessarily unity) of theological education, which they argue requires equipping theological education communities to discern and put into practice what God is calling them to do in contemporary circumstances.
