Abstract:

James Davison Hunter presents a constructive analysis of the sources of the moral and cultural conflicts which continue to confront late twentieth century America. Hunter carefully examines several cultural conflicts in America and proposes that these issues are not isolated from one another but are, in fact, part of a fabric of conflict which constitutes nothing short of a struggle over the meaning of America. Hunter notes that unlike the religious and cultural conflicts that historically divided the nation, the contemporary culture war is fought along new and unfamiliar lines. He presents several accounts of how Chrisitan fundamentalists, Orthodox Jews, and conservative Catholics have joined forces in fierce battle against their progressive counterparts as each side struggles to gain control. And finally, Hunter offers guidance in understanding and controlling the culture wars of our society.
