Abstract:

Approximately thirty scholars gathered at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, December 6 to 8, 1985, for this consultation on the arts in theological education. It provided the participants the opportunity to identify broad theoretical, institutional, and curricular issues. The first part of the consultation focused on two books: John Dillenberger's The Visual Arts and Christian Thought: Historic and Contemporary Issues and a Plea for Wider Horizons, and Wilson Yates's study, The Arts in Theological Education. Later sessions gave participants the opportunity to observe and reflect on works of art at the Cannon Chapel (with architect Paul Rudolph), at the Emory Museum of Art and Archaeology, and at the High Museum of Art. The consultation also produced an agenda for future discussion and action. (KA)
