Abstract: 

Since 1968 the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., (CARA) has published directories of Catholic ministry formation programs. In 1997 CARA developed a Catholic Ministry Formation Directory that for the first time collates information on 615 seminary, diaconate formation, and lay ministry formation programs in the United States. The directory provides detailed information on 203 programs forming candidates for the priesthood (theologate, college, and high-school level seminaries, as well as houses of formation), 131 diocesan programs forming candidates for the diaconate, and 281 programs preparing lay Catholics for ministry. The directory provides statistics and identifies trends through graphs and charts in an extraordinary range of categories relevant to formation for ministry, not all of which are described here. Important trends identified and illustrated include numbers of pre-theology students from 1980 to 1996, the ratio of theology students to ordinations from 1967 to 1996, as well as demographic profiles of seminarians. Seminaries are also profiled according to enrollment and cost. Candidates for the permanent diaconate and diaconate formation programs are described for the first time. Trends in numbers of deacons from 1977 to 1996 are shown, and candidates for the diaconate are described demographically. Information on increasingly important lay ministry formation programs is contained in the directory for the third time. The numbers of states and dioceses that have lay ministry formation programs, the total number of these programs, and their enrollments is tracked from 1986 to 1997. These figures are broken down into academic-based and diocesan-based programs. Participants are profiled according to gender, age, and race, and the programs themselves are described in terms of cost, content, faculty, and sponsorship.
