Abstract:

Robert Handy chronicles the creation and development of one of
the more influential institutions in the history of American
theological education. His account traces Union Seminary's
transformation into a nondenominational seminary, its key role
in the emergence of the ecumenical movement and its involvement
over a century and a half in major conflicts within American
Christianity over such issues as the interpretation of scripture
and the church's responsibility in addressing social problems
of its day.
