Abstract:

Catholic higher education currently faces uncertainty about its religious identity and mission. This article by David O’Brien seeks to help those interested in initiating discussions about these issues for Catholic institutions of higher education. O'Brien offers ten points to consider when exploring this issue. They are: (1) Catholicism is a "good thing;" (2) the revolution of incorporation at these institutions; (3) institutional accountability; (4) who are the Catholics in a Catholic institution of higher educaton; (5) Catholic intellectual life; (6) the role of the laity in this issue; (7) the need to be constructive and concrete; (8) Catholic Studies; (9) open access to Catholic higher education; and (10) the fact that such conversations should exhibit a form of "confident modesty."
